The picture goes from the camera to this page and no further. It is not captured, not recorded and never uploaded, and the camera is released the moment you press stop or leave.

How to test a webcam

  1. 1 Press start and allow camera access. The preview is exactly the stream a video call would receive, so what you see here is what your colleagues get.
  2. 2 Check the resolution and frame rate under the picture. A camera that claims 1080p but reports 640 by 480 is usually being limited by a driver or by another program holding it open.
  3. 3 Look at the light rather than the picture for a moment. If the indicator on the camera does not come on, another application already has the device.
  4. 4 On a phone, use the switch button to check the rear camera as well. Both are separate devices and can fail independently.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video recorded or uploaded?
Neither. The stream is shown in a video element and nothing else happens to it: no snapshot, no buffer, no server. Closing the page ends it completely.
The camera works elsewhere but not here.
Most often another program still holds it. Video call apps keep the camera open in the background; close them and start the test again. On Windows, the camera privacy setting can also block browsers specifically.
Why is the picture darker or grainier than in my call app?
Call software applies its own brightness, noise reduction and framing. This test shows the raw stream, which is closer to what the sensor really produces.
The frame rate looks low.
Low light is the usual cause: most cameras drop to half the frame rate to keep the picture bright. Turn a lamp towards yourself and watch the number recover.
