How to take the typing test

  1. 1 Pick a length. Fifteen seconds shows your peak, sixty is the number worth quoting because it survives one bad word.
  2. 2 Type the words as they appear and separate them with a space. The text stays where it is and you type over it, so your eyes keep their place; the clock starts on your first keystroke, not on a button.
  3. 3 Letters darken as you type over them correctly and turn red when they do not match. Carrying on does not repair a wrong letter, so fix it before the space.
  4. 4 Words per minute counts correct characters divided by five, the standard word length used by every serious typing test, so your score is comparable to the ones you see elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute is ordinary, 60 to 70 is comfortably fast, and above 90 is unusual outside people who type for a living. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: 60 words per minute at 98 percent beats 80 at 90, because fixing mistakes costs more time than making them saved.
Are the words in my language?
Yes. Each published language has its own pool of everyday words, because typing English on a German keyboard measures your English rather than your typing.
Why did my score drop compared to another site?
Most differences come from how errors are counted. Here only correct characters count towards the score and every keystroke counts towards accuracy, which is stricter than tests that simply ignore mistyped words.
Is my typing sent anywhere?
No. The words are generated in your browser and what you type is compared there and then discarded. Nothing is stored and nothing leaves your device.
