On a desktop this works with the mouse held down, which is useful for checking a pen or a trackpad but says nothing about a touch screen.

How to test a touch screen

  1. 1 Drag one finger slowly across the whole pad, in overlapping lines, until the area is covered. A break in the trail marks a spot that did not report.
  2. 2 Press with two, three and four fingers at once. The counter shows how many the screen follows at the same time, which is where cheap panels give up.
  3. 3 Repeat near the edges and corners. Damage from a drop usually shows there first, and edges are where a protective film lifts and blocks contact.
  4. 4 Clear the trail and try again after cleaning the screen. Grease and a badly fitted screen protector produce gaps that look exactly like a fault.

Frequently asked questions

Part of my screen does not respond. Is the digitiser broken?
Possibly, but check the cheap causes first: a screen protector with a bubble under it, a wet or greasy finger, or a case pressing on the edge. If a clean screen still has the same gap in the same place, the digitiser is the likely answer.
How many touch points should a screen handle?
Modern phones and tablets handle five to ten. Ten is common on tablets and laptops with touch, and anything below five is unusual outside older or very cheap panels.
Why does my stylus not draw a trail?
Active pens with their own battery are often reported as a separate pointer type, and some need their app or driver to be running. Try a finger first to confirm the screen itself is fine.
Does the test work in a browser as well as a native app?
For finding dead areas and counting fingers, yes. Pressure and tilt from a pen are less consistently exposed to web pages, so a drawing app remains the better judge of those.
